The Krio Descendants Union (KDU) was formed in Dallas, Texas in 2007 and modeled after the Krio Descendants Yunion (KDY) in Freetown; an organization that was started by Mama Cassandra Garber. It was formed to unite all Krios, both Christians and Muslims, and preserve Krio history, culture, and heritage for generations to come. Prior to 2007, there were already in existence various Krio organizations such as the Freetown Overseas League (California), Rokel Association (Washington Metro), Krio Heritage Society (Northeast) and We Yone Descendants Association (Georgia). These eventually joined the newly formed KDU. In 2008, KDU in Texas hosted a weekend of activities which subsequently became known as the KDU Family Reunion. It is now an annual event that brings together all the chapters of the KDU.
In response to the call by KDU Global for each Chapter to adopt a traditional Krio village, KDU California, after a vote my members, adopted Murray Town in October 2024. This was partly because of the distinguished history of the village as well as the fact that the new Krio Museum and Cultural Center will be in Murray Town. KDU California has identified a proposed project to undertake at Murray Town School.
