Improving learning conditions for students through infrastructure support.
KDU California is supporting improvements to Murray Town School in Sierra Leone by helping pave the quadrangle assembly area of the school grounds, where the principal, teachers and pupils gather for daily morning devotion to begin the day and where all official ceremonies are held at the school. of the school grounds. This project reduced dust during the dry season, prevent mud during the rainy season, and created a safer and cleaner learning environment for students.
Due to water shortages, Murray Town School’s grounds remained bare dirt, causing heavy dust in the dry season and mud during the rainy season. To create a cleaner and safer environment for students, KDU California partnered with the Murray Town Association to pave key areas of the school grounds, including the quadrangle and main walkways. This improvement will benefit students, staff, and community gatherings at the school.
Murray Town, now part of the Municipality of Freetown, was founded in April 1829 as a settlement for Liberated Africans brought to Sierra Leone by the British Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron. Named after George Murray, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies at the time, the village originally housed over 300 Liberated Africans, many from the Egba tribe of Nigeria. Over time, Murray Town has grown into a diverse community while maintaining strong Christian and Methodist traditions, with Ebenezer Methodist Church and Jordan West African Methodist Church playing important roles in the spiritual life of its residents.
The paving of the school grounds is an important milestone, but it is only the beginning of improving the learning environment at Murray Town School. There are still many needs, including classroom materials, facility improvements, student resources, and programs that help children succeed.
